"I'm excited to unite with other PCAs in Virginia because it's a great way to join my voice with others for improvements."
--Otelia Hogan, PCAThe Virginia Association of Personal Care Assistants (VAPCA) is a professional organization of PCAs that gives caregivers a voice to improve working conditions, reduce turnover, and build a stable workforce that ensures people with disabilities and seniors get the care they need to live at home as long as they choose. Find out how you can join VAPCA by calling us at 1-800-893-8343.
As PCAs, we work hard to provide the personal care and assistance that the people we care for need to live independently.
But we face many challenges:
- Virginia ranks 45th in wages nationally for personal care assistants.
- PCAs don't receive any health care insurance, sick days, or vacation time.
- If a caregiver can't work, there's no centralized system for backup.
- Home caregivers receive little job training and have few opportunities for advancement.
That's why PCAs in Virginia are uniting our resources and efforts for the strength in numbers needed to make real improvements.
PCAs in Motion
PCAs from around the state are meeting regularly to plan how we can get our elected officials to improve the long term care system in Virginia. VAPCA members spoke at the Governor's Health Reform Commission Hearing in Richmond about the importance of home care. We made our presence known at budget hearings around the state in January, and we stood 80+ members strong in unity with our disability allies on Indpendent Living Lobby Day in Richmond in January.
We've visited other PCAs and held house meetings to get the word out—and elected officials are starting to pay attention. Just think how strong we can be when all of us are involved!
